Family Violence Intervention Programs (FVIPs)

Family Violence Intervention Programs (FVIPs) are 24 weeks education program designed to help abusers take responsibility for their violence. It helps them understand that use of violence, control and domination over you are barriers to a healthy relationship. It helps them learn non-violent, respectful ways of communicating with you and others. Certified FVIP's provide group education sessions for court ordered family violence defendants, TPO respondents and volunteer participants who want to change their beliefs and actions.

Attending these classes is not a guarantee that he will change. He may be resistant to let go of his beliefs and continue to abuse you. He may use the information he receives against you or try to make you take responsibility for your actions. He may stay away from physically harming you, but continue to use verbal, emotional or continue to isolate you from people who could help you. He may try to convince you that he should attend Anger Management classes, substance abuse treatment or marriage counseling as opposed to FVIPs. Anger Management classes or any other class or therapy does not deal with the root causes of his violence; his beliefs that he is superior to you and can control you. Enabling abusers by teaching them how to manage their violence will put you and your children more in danger.

Whether he chooses to change his beliefs and actions or not, we want you to be safe. If your abuser is court ordered into a FVIP, a Victim Liaison will contact you to help you and your children be safe from abuse. Victim Liaisons are not representatives of immigration offices and do not work with your abusers. They are domestic violence victim advocates who are trained to identify different tactics of abuse, have knowledge of resources and can help you and your children be safe. If you are living in a shelter, Victim Liaisons will work with you to understand how the tactic of abuse may change and plan for safety. If you would like to contact a Victim Liaison call 1.800.33.HAVEN to talk to one in your area.
